CAS Totals for 2012 and LAST CALL!

Now that all of the data entry of all of the CAS forms is complete, it is time for you seniors to come on around to A109 and check the print out I have for your class of your totals for CAS. It is posted just outside of my classroom door and is listed by your student number and has the total number of hours your earned in each category, and whether or not you turned in all of the required forms, visual, journal, etc. If you are missing something, or the totals are not accurate, please contact me in person during my CAS office hours.

There are still FAR too many of you that didn't do something for CAS properly (or didn't do it at all) and you have already been contacted by me via note. Please get the paperwork to me ASAP, because as soon as all of your CAS files are checked, I will be reporting to IBNA with the names of the people that did not complete their CAS requirements. Unfortunately, that list is quite long. Don't let a simple thing like this prevent you for getting your IB diploma after all of your hard work here the last three and a half years.

This is the LAST reminder that your final due date for CAS is Friday January 20th. Everything must be done properly, everything signed off, and all of the forms, visuals, journals, etc. are due on (OR BEFORE) the 20th. If you wait until that last day, expect to stand in line for up to four hours. I kid you not. Missing the deadline because you don't want to stand in a long line is not an acceptable excuse...or any excuse for that matter. See you soon.

Yep...this is the BIG one. ALL IB CAS hours, evaluations, AFS, SFS forms, CAS reflection journals, CAS adviser form B and CAS visuals (to be displayed at Open House) are all due on (or before) January 20, 2012. A reminder: all 150 (full diploma) or 100 (associate diploma) hours need to be 100% complete by this date. In other words: ALL CAS PAPERWORK IS DUE ON THIS DATE. NO EXCEPTIONS! If you fail to meet all of your CAS obligations on or before this date, your name will be provided to your ToK teacher and your grade in that class will be significantly affected in a negative fashion. Yet another reason to meet this deadline (as if you needed another reason…)

A common question is: “what has to be on a CAS visual?” Photos of what you did for Creative hours, what you did for Action hours and what you did for Service hours. Any other memorabilia, articles, certificates, etc. that has to do with this might be included as well. Basically a visual representation of what you did for CAS for others to look at and be inspired by.

Another question: “What kind of visual?” I used to accept Power Points burned onto CDs, BUT NO LONGER! Posters are now the ONLY acceptable kind of CAS visual. If you have some other kind of creative idea, run it by me first, but the low-tech kind of visuals work best for CAS.

Hey you juniors…yeah…you people that are (allegedly) graduating in 2013: Don't forget that there is a CAS deadline coming up on the 2^nd of December. Which one is that? You need to meet with your CAS adviser and show them at least ten pages of CAS reflection in either a comp. book or on a blog. Once they have looked over your ramblings, ruminations and reflections, have them sign and date the first entry on Form A. What do you do then? What do you turn in? NOTHING! Form A is due on May 9^th 2012, after it has been signed a second time, so hang onto it until then and continue to fill your CAS journal with your ideas. BTW: this only applies to those of you that are doing the full diploma, if you aren't, thanks for reading this far, but you can ignore this. ;-)

Deterding Elementary School is sponsoring their annual Fall Festival on Sunday October 23 and are in need of student volunteers to come and help out with this event. A student can earn up to five community service hour if they would like. This event is a lot of fun! Volunteers would run a festival game booth, assist with food service and clean-up at the end of the day.

Welcome back! As we start a new school year, I thought it wise to inform you of the due dates for MYP Community Service and CAS deadlines for this school year, along with a few other bits of news. First, the due dates:

Deadlines & due dates for Mira Loma’s IB CAS & IB MYP community service programs for the 2011-2012 school year

Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors- If you have a new and un-approved MYP CS or CAS proposal for this fall or this school year, then you need to have it turned in and approved by September 28, 2011. If you already have an approved plan, then you’re OK, there’s no need to check in.

Juniors- You need to have ten pages in your CAS reflection journal and meet with your CAS advisor by December 2, 2011. Make sure your advisor signs your Form A.

Freshmen & Sophomores- MYP community service mid-year check in (Step 2 in the packet): January 18, 2012

Seniors- This is the BIG one. ALL IB CAS hours, evaluations, AFS, SFS forms, CAS reflection journals, CAS advisor form B and CAS visuals (to be displayed at Open House) are due on January 20, 2012. San Juan Reads: A Great Service Opportunity

San Juan Reads is a four week program focusing on reading for grades 1-6.
As a volunteer you will work with a teacher following a set curriculum,while helping the students advance
their reading skills and helping them to be life long readers.

Effie Yeaw Nature Center is Offering LOTS of opportunities for Community Service.

The Effie Yeaw Nature Center is holding its 2^nd Annual Art Gala, Painting Where the Wild Things Live, on Saturday, May 21^st. We are looking for some awesome volunteers to assist with the set-up and breakdown of the event.

We need kids (16 years +) who are strong, focused, and reliable, to help us with these tasks.

First, we need volunteers (up to 6) to help us on Saturday, May 14^th, from 1:00 to 4:00, to help set up some huge doors that we are using as temporary walls/panels to hang art on. Volunteers will be moving these into place, attaching them (ability to weld a screw driver is helpful here), and then painting them –yes, paint clothes and a willingness to paint panels white are required.

Then we will need volunteers (up to 8) to help us set up tables, chairs, cover the tables with table clothes, put up signs, blow up balloons, string lights in trees (okay with ladders), put out table flower arrangements, etc. This will be on Saturday, May 21^st, from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm.

We also need a couple of art lovers to assist our resident artist, David Peterson, with the Plein Air (outside painting) competition on Saturday, May 21^st. This task will be from 8:30 am to about 2:30 pm. Assistants will help set up the table and supplies in the morning, and then help hand out the supplies to artists throughout the morning. They will be receiving the art back in the early afternoon and putting it on display at that time. Then the assistant will help David put everything away. This is a great opportunity for art students, but it is not required—what is required is a good attitude and a pleasant manner.

On Sunday, May 22^nd, we need help with the clean-up and taking the panels back down. This will begin at 1:00 on Sunday and last until 3:00 or so.

The LAST community service deadline of the year for you folks is coming up quickly. All final hours sheets and evaluation forms are due NO LATER than March 16, 2011. If you aren’t clear what that is, you need to turn in a minimum of 20 hours of CS, and have that explained, evaluated and signed off on steps 3 and 4 in the MYP packet. Want to avoid standing in a long line? Turn it in early during my regular CS and CAS hours. You would be well advised that you need to have a minimum of 40 hours of CS to qualify for the MYP certificate. DON'T FORGET AND DON'T BE LATE!

Northridge Elementary School's Country Faire Needs Volunteers!

Northridge Elementary School in Fair Oaks is holding our annual Country Faire on Friday, October 22. We could use some volunteers to help with set-up, run games and clean up. The hours of help would be between 4:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Most volunteers would be given a one hour time slot, rather than staying for the entire time. Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church Upward Basketball Needs Referees

Referees needed for a childrens basketball program. Boys and girls (Kindergarten thru 6th grade) will be playing basketball on Saturdays starting in January.

This is a positive atmosphere and a negative response to referees and coaches is not acceptable. We train the referees for their part and new referees will be working with experienced mentors. The training session for referees will be held on Saturday, December 18th from 9 am until Noon.

Walk for Diabetes for CS Hours

Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is the national movement to end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on millions of individuals and families across our nation. It will inspire and mobilize the general public, volunteers, donors, corporations and the scientific and medical communities to rally around our cause and our call to "share, act, learn, and give." Through these actions, millions will have the chance to get involved and help raise awareness, promote healthy living, and raise money to fund educational outreach, advocacy efforts, and critical research that will ultimately stop diabetes once and for all.

On October 9th, the Just for the Health of It! Club at Mira Loma will participate in the Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes at the California State Capitol West Steps.

Deterding's Fall Festival needs volunteers!

Deterding's Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16th from 11am to 3pm. Deterding Elementary is located at 6000 Stanley Avenue, Carmichael. Volunteers are needed to set-up, work the game booths, serve food, and more. This festival is a chance for the Deterding community along with family and friends to come together. It is a great time with good food and wonderful music. If you choose to spend the day at the Fall Festival you could earn up to six hours in community service hours. Set-up starts at 10am. Tutor at BSAC for Service Hours

Breakthrough Sacramento (BSAC) is a non-profit, six-year college preparatory program for academically motivated students from under-resourced schools throughout Sacramento. During the school year we offer after-school tutorials, called Weekly Breakthroughs (WBs), at five different sites throughout Sacramento. Students have the opportunity to be tutor/advisers for our program and work to reinforce students’ academic skills primarily in math and writing.

The program offers WBs, Monday-Thursday after school hours, ranging from 2:30-5:00. The sessions are an hour and a half and tutors can tutor once a week or up to four times a week if they choose.

Lastly, in addition to offering tutor/adviser opportunities for your students, BSAC also offers a highly competitive summer teaching internship opportunity. This internship opportunity has been ranked one of the Princeton Review’s Top 10 internships in America. Since the summer teaching positions are very competitive and demanding, working with our school year program provides good experience and preparation for the rigor of the summer.

They will have about 10 arts and crafts and activity booths, mostly centering on the theme of the Chinese Autumn Moon Festival, plus activities like Chinese yo yo, hacky sack, tangrams and more. I would strongly suggest that you write these dates in your planner, enter them into a calendar app, whatever it takes SO THAT YOU DON'T MISS THEM! I will also make sure that you get a hard copy of these dates so your excuse of "not knowing" will be un-viable. Seniors- This is the BIG one. ALL IB CAS hours, evaluations, AFS, SFS forms, CAS reflection journals, CAS advisor form B and CAS visuals (to be displayed at Open House) are due on January 21, 2011. A reminder: all 150 (full diploma) or 100 (associate diploma) hours need to be 100% complete by this date. In other words: ALL CAS PAPERWORK IS DUE ON THIS DATE. NO EXCEPTIONS! A new addition this year is as follows: instead of a check in at the start of the school year, if you fail to meet all of your CAS obligations on or before this date, your name will be provided to your ToK teacher and your grade in that class will be significantly affected in a negative fashion. Then Fresh Producers is the place for you to serve the community, as we are the premier distributor of value-added affordable good food in the Sacramento area. At-risk youth and adults, as well as many others who want to make a difference are learning that fresh fundraising is possible by replacing sales of candy, cookie dough and gift wrap with weekly parcels of fruits and vegetables and other nutritious items. Our $10 bag brimming with delicious and nutritious goodies would cost $15-18 in the store, and we return $2 from every order to the community for jobs, support for athletics and the arts, as well as other programs that enhance youth and community well-being.

We can use your help this summer and into next year in any number of different ways. We’re working with St. John’s Shelter for Women and their new food services training program, with dozens of delivery sites, and creating numerous opportunities to make a difference. If you love to work with people, if you love to organize and give structure to things, if you like to cook, teach, and coach others to present and communicate, if you’re a computer whiz interested in social media networking for teens, if you’re into video production, we would love to hear from you.

This is our school’s 50th year and the Alumni and Friends are working on a fitting celebration during Homecoming in October...and starting an Alumni Association to help bring back many graduates and start a fundraising effort to support all the great programs and efforts going on at Mira Loma. This is a huge number of people (~400+/year x 50 years = 20,000+grads)

Now that open house for 2010 has come and gone, I’m finished with your CAS visuals that you dropped off with me back in January. Some of you might want to retrieve assorted memorabilia, photos, etc. from your visuals, or merely want to repossess your CDs and cases. Whatever the rationale, they are available for pick up during my regular CAS hours in room A109. After April 23, they will be “taken care of,” so please see me before then. Thanks!

Important information for MYP 4 students

In order to clear up any confusion, rumors or misunderstanding, you HAVE TO do 40 hours of community service by late February 2011 of your sophomore year in order to get the MYP certificate. Additionally, you need to complete the personal project as well, details of which I’m sure you’ve heard about from Mr. Sullivan. There were far too many MYP 5 students this year that did the personal project, but they will not be getting their MYP certificates, due to too few (or in some cases NO) community service hours. Don’t let that be you next year. Be SURE to do the required community service hours.

On Saturday night, Deterding Elementary is having a Spaghetti Feed and talent show at St. John's Parish on Locust Ave. We need some extra help to sell drinks and raffle tickets. The LAST community service deadline of the year for you folks is coming up quickly. All final hours sheets and evaluation forms are due on February 24, 2010. If you aren’t clear what that is, you need to turn in a minimum of 20 hours of CS, and have that explained, evaluated and signed off on steps 3 and 4 in the MYP packet. Want to avoid standing in a long line? Turn it in early during my regular CS and CAS hours.

There is a mid-year check in for MYP 4 & 5 students for community service coming up this Wednesday. Ideally, you should’ve started your community service by now and logged some hours. Those should be detailed on Step 2 of the MYP packet. Please turn those in to me no later that Wednesday January 20th. If you haven’t done any hours yet, no need to panic, but start SOON! ALL hours are due on or before the final due dates on May 12, 2010 for Freshmen and February 24, 2010 for Sophomores. What exactly do you turn in? Steps 3 & 4 in the packet.

Seniors...yep...this is it: the biggie. I’ve harped on you enough, so I know that you know what you have to do. In order to make things go as quickly as possible for your final check-in, have your paperwork grouped by type: Creative hours, Action hours, or Service hours. Also make sure that the forms are in this sequence: Hours, Evaluation and Reflection (the AEF form). Please staple them together like this as well. If you have more than one Hours sheet, please have a grand total of all of the hours on the LAST page and circle it prominently. Don't forget to bring your patience...your wait is going to be L O N G.

Procrastination=LONG lines and wait times

With your final CAS deadline approaching, I’m hoping that you are getting all of your CAS forms in order so you can turn them in by the deadline on the 22nd of next month. What should you expect if you wait until the 22nd? A VERY LONG wait, sometimes up to three hours. THREE HOURS!? That’s right, it’s happened in the past, routinely. How do you avoid that? Well, you can always turn your CAS items in early, during my regular CAS hours, and I would be more than happy to take them off your hands. Unless you LIKE to stand in line…then…in that case…enjoy.

SENIORS! THE TIME OF RECKONING IS AT HAND!

I’m not talking about the end of the Mayan calendar in December 2012, but your FINAL CAS due date next month on the 22nd, which might be a close second in significance…

What’s due on (or preferably before) that day? Here’s a list:

• All CAS hours, totaled at the bottom, signed off and a contact phone number provided
• An evaluation form for each activity that you did, signed by your supervisor
• An AEF Form, filled out by you and signed off by your supervisor
• One SFS form, filled out in its entirety
• One CAS visual, which shows what you did for Creative hours, what you did for Action hours and what you did for Service hours. This can be a poster or a PowerPoint, but it must be burned onto a CD and saved in an older format so that it will play on my Office 2004 in my Mac. Newer versions of office or Vista (god forbid!) won’t work on here.

ALL full diploma and associate students need to submit all of the above, and the minimum number of hours that needs to be met, according to the type of diploma.

Full diploma candidates need to submit the following as well:
• A CAS reflection journal with a minimum of 30 FULL pages of thoughtful reflections about your CAS while you were doing it the past year and a half.
• One CAS Reflection Form B that is signed off by your TOK teacher

If you do not meet this deadline…well, it’s not going to be pretty. All of that hard work for naught. It almost might make you WISH for the apocalypse!

Class of 2011: Deadline Approaching

Just a reminder to you juniors: you need to have at least ten pages in your CAS reflection journals and meet with your CAS advisor by December 4, 2009. Make sure your advisor signs your Form A. You do not need to turn in anything to me, but I will give you grief if you do not meet the deadline, as I will see your Form A this spring when you DO turn it in, after your second meeting with your CAS advisor. Contact them now, do not procrastinate.

Deterding is offering A GREAT Opportunity for Community Service Hours

Deterding Elementary School is holding it’s annual Fall festival Sunday October 25th from 11am - 3pm.
We will start with a costume parade followed by games and food.
Volunteers are need for the following jobs:
Set up 10am-11am
Manning game booths 11am-3pm (in 1 hour increments)
Face Painting 11am-3pm (in 1 hour increments)
Clean up & Breakdown 3pm-4pm

This is a great way to acquire community service hours while having fun at the same time. The festival is packed with games, face painting, food, and our annual costume parade. Work as little as one hour or as many as you would like. All shifts are broken down into one hour increments

I would strongly suggest that you write these dates in your calendar so you don't miss a deadline...and trust me...is isn't pretty when those deadlines are missed. You'll be receiving a copy of his in your English class as well, so there are NO excuses.

Hey! I hope you've all had a relaxing summer break away from the stress of school, yet I still hope that you found a few hours here and there to do some CAS or community service hours. Before we start up again on the 24th of this month, I wanted to remind y'all of my CAS and CS hours. I am available Monday through Thursdays after school and Wednesdays at lunch as well, all in room A109. If you try and stop by other times, or stop me in the hall, I might not be too receptive, because I have a lot of other responsibilities here on campus, so please try and touch base with me when I have my CAS and CS hours, and my brain is engaged accordingly. Community Service Totals

I’ve never bothered to do this before (don’t ask me why), but I totaled up the number of community service hours that the students in the IB MYP and DP programs have done here in the Sacramento community and around the world.

Class of 2012 (Freshmen) 4,284.25 hours in one school year

Class of 2011 (Sophomores) 6004.25 hours in two school years

Class of 2010 (Juniors) 6,433.7 hours in three school years

Class of 2009 (Seniors) 3,183.3 hours in four years

This equals a grand total of 19,905.5 hours of community service. Impressive!

A nice little bit of information, and another reason to be proud of the students here at Mira Loma High School.

As stated in my previous post, there will be no more CAS or CS paperwork accepted this year. I extended the deadline for almost two weeks, so if you waited until now to come and see me, well, I'm sorry. Hang on to your paperwork until next school year and I'll collect it then. The end of the year is a very busy time for teachers, so I'm not to amenable to procrastinators.

If an opportunity for CS or CAS comes up over the summer break, email me for approval, but I'm frequently not near a computer during the summer, so the turn-around time might not exactly be prompt.

All the same, enjoy your summer, and I'll see you in August.

The End of the year is here...

...and with that comes the final deadline for CAS. All summer proposals for CAS or MYP CS are due tomorrow (5/20). However, I will allow a bit of flexibility and I will take proposals and any signed off CAS hours until the end of the month of May. After that, don't even THINK about trying to give me anything CAS or CS related, as I will be dealing with finals, grading, packing up my room and the like, so get your CAS and CS obligations done now.

If you have a fantastic CAS or CS opportunity that comes up over the summer, fell free to email me for approval. But given my numerous CAS and CS hours each week during the school year, I reserve the privilege of emailing for summertime only. Face to face meetings are MUCH quicker. Thanks for understanding.

Deterding Elementary Art Festival is Offering CS hours

A reminder for all CS & CAS deadlines for the rest of the school year

Class of 2012: All final hours sheets (steps three and four in the packet) are due by May 13, 2009.

Class of 2010 and 2011: All summer CAS proposals are due by May 20, 2009

No other CAS or MYP CS paperwork will be accepted after May 29, 2009, so don’t even TRY to turn anything in after that. So if you want to turn in any paperwork before that, by all means, do so. Get your hours totaled, signed off, reflections filled out (if you’re done) and get ‘em to me.

ALL classes: you can start doing CAS or CS for next school year on Sunday June 7, 2009, but not before. Any hours done before that date will count for THIS school year.

Please remember and honor my CS and CAS office hours: Monday through Thursday after school and Wednesdays at lunch, all in room A109. There might be times when I can’t deal with CS or CAS because I’ll be doing something else, like distributing yearbooks, which will take precedent. Thanks for understanding.

The due date to meet again with your CAS advisor is approaching fast. That date is May 4, 2009. When meeting with your advisor, you should have at least ten MORE pages in your reflection journal and have form A ready for them to sign a second time. Final tree planting at Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge With the NATURE team

Saturday, April 18, 2009 8:45am to 1pm

Our NATURE team, with the help of volunteers has planted hundreds of acorns and seedlings throughout the Sacramento area. This planting will take place in the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, in a location not usually accessible to the general public. This is a special place to volunteer and see some of the great wildlife around us. Assist us with properly planting the last few to make it into the ground this season. We promise lots of fun and a great time with friends!

Volunteers must arrive by 8:45am as the group will carpool out to the special planting location, not usually open to the public. Anyone arriving later will risk being left behind. Volunteers must be able to stay until 1pm.

Meeting location: from I5, exit at Elk Grove Blvd and head West. This will immediately dead end into a cul-de-sac along side the Refuge. If it looks like you’re heading into nowhere, you’re in the right place! NATURE staff will be there to meet you. Please wear closed toed shoes and weather appropriate clothing. A water bottle and gloves also recommended.

Earn CS & CAS Hours Tutoring ML Athletes

The Athletic Department at Mira Loma is now operating a study hall in room C-1 for athletes who need academic assistance to improve their grades. Study hall is held on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Mr. De Ruysscher has agreed to allow IB students to earn community service hours by providing tutorial help in the study hall. Currently we need significant assistance in Algebra as well as some help in English and Japanese. Please contact Mr. De Ruysscher who will authorize your service and then report to room C-1 Tuesdays and Thursdays after school on a continuing basis. On Saturday, April 4, 2009, Fulton-El Camio is having their annual Egg-O-Rama! Games, Activities, Egg Scramble and the Easter Bunny will all be at Howe Park, 2201 Cottage Way.
A Sacramento State group is working on this event for a final project and will need bunches of volunteers for it to run smoothly. If you need some more CS or CAS hours, then this is the event for you.
