My Final Post

To quote a lyric from a famous Grateful Dead tune: "...what a long strange trip its been..." These past seven years as CS and CAS coordinator have run the gamut from fun to frustrating, from tedious to terrific. But as I step back from this role, I leave the CS and CAS program at Mira Loma High School in the very capable hands of Ms. Jacks. She is bringing a new perspective and approach to this part of the IB program, and I have the utmost confidence in her skills and abilities to make it even better and more successful! If you want information or have questions, the best place to start would be at her blog, which can be found here: http://miralomacas.wordpress.com/

I wish all of you nothing but success in your CS and CAS endeavors.

Regards,

--Mr. De Ruysscher

Some BIG Changes Coming to MYP CS and CAS...

To quote François de la Rochefoucauld: “The only thing constant in life is change”

Why the random quote from some French dude? Because it's true! After seven years of coordinating MYP Community Service and DP CAS for Mira Loma High School, it's time for some CHANGE. This school year is going to be my last one in the role as the Community Service and CAS Coordinator. Not only that, but the way CS and CAS is going to be recorded will change as well. There is a lot to tell, but the person best equipped to explain things is the new CS and CAS Coordinator: Ms. Jacks! She and I are going to be working together with what's left of the school year to (hopefully) make the transition to the new coordinator and the new system and smooth as possible. Stay tuned for details and dates so you can learn about these new...you guessed it...CHANGES!

Seniors! Last Call for CAS Visuals

Seniors! Please come and pick up your CAS visuals if you would like to retrieve anything off of it that you would like to keep, or has some kind of sentimental value to you. If you do not get them by the end of the day on Friday April 20th, I will assume that you don't want them, and I will dispose of them accordingly. Please come by during my CAS office hours and get your visual THIS WEEK. Thanks!

Volunteer for CS and CAS hours at Sacramento Children's Museum

Sacramento Children’s Museum is in need of some volunteers to help out with daily activities at the Museum. All interested applicants can fill out an application on our website, www.sackids.org or come in to the Museum during regular hours and fill one out in person. We will be holding a mandatory volunteer orientation in the near future that all potential volunteers are required to attend.

Volunteer duties may include:

-Help in exhibits and programmed activities in the museum

-Assist Museum staff as needed with crafting, interacting with children on the museum floor, etc.

-Opportunities to perform demonstrations, plays, musical performances and storytelling

-Guide Museum visitors through the exhibits and activities

-Join Museum staff at Evening Special Events such as fundraisers, Beary Special Dance Parties, Birthday parties, member only nights at the museum and sponsor nights

We have a wide range of volunteer opportunities here at the museum including:

-Docent: A docent is a volunteer educator that will be stationed at one of our exhibits. Volunteers that have their days free and are interested in teaching youth in the community how SCM’s exhibits work are perfect for docent positions. Docents would be trained on all of our exhibits including Raceways, Airways, Waterways, Solar Race, Leo’s Market, Art Studio, and My Neighborhood to create a more inviting visitor experience and guarantee our visitors a day full of learning!

-Exhibit/ Program Volunteer: Daily time on the floor working alongside staff members. This would include interacting with museum guests, maintaining museum exhibits, and enforcing the museum rules. Any volunteers interested in doing everything, this is the opportunity for you!

-Family Volunteering: Families with children under the age of 15 are encouraged to bring in their families to help out with any of the duties in the museum, from prep work to special events and projects. We welcome kids six and over as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

-Special Events: This type of position is for volunteers who would like to be contacted when we have a special event going on at the museum, such as a fundraiser, or a public event like Free Museum Day.

-Material Prep: An opportunity to help prepare materials for arts and crafts, activities or other events going on at SCM.

If you have any questions, please contact Olivia Furtado at volunteer@sackids.org.

Seniors, Please pick up your CAS visuals!

Seniors, starting TOMORROW 4/10, please pick up your CAS visuals!

Now that open house for 2012 has come and gone, I’m finished with your CAS visuals that you dropped off with me back in January. Some of you might want to retrieve assorted memorabilia, photos, medals, certificates, etc. from your visuals. Whatever the case, they are available for pick-up during my regular CAS hours in room A109. After April 20th 2012, they will be “taken care of" (i.e. given to the tree hugging hippies for recycling) so please see me WELL before then if you would like your visual back. Thanks!

Walk for Thought for CS Hours

The 5th annual Walk for Thought will be taking place in less than two weeks – on Sunday, March 25th on the west steps of the State Capitol. This event offers a great opportunity for your students to gain community service hours while helping to raise awareness of brain injury in the Sacramento community.

If you have any questions about how your students can volunteer for this event or even form teams and participate in the walk, do not hesitate to contact me at (916) 453-7927.

We hope your school can join us in supporting this great cause!

Sincerely,

Joel W. Solomon, Psy.D.
